The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda

I love a good mystery so I was automatically intrigued by The Last House Guest. The book takes place over the course of a couple of years in a beachy, tourist Connecticut town. Avery grew up among the average joes of the town, seemingly blending in with the crowd. Tragedy strikes when she loses her parents and then her grandmother and is left all alone. Sadie is from the prominent Loman family that owns rental properties throughout the town. Avery and Sadie become best friends when once again, Avery suffers another loss when her best friend is found dead at the bottom of the cliffs. A year after Sadie’s death, Avery cannot shake the feeling that Sadie’s death was not of her own doing and sets out to discover the truth about her best friend.
At times, I found the book to be hard to follow as there were so many different storylines and characters introduced. There are so many details embedded throughout the book and you find yourself always going back to them, putting the pieces together. I thought Miranda did a great job tying up the loose ends but when you finally get things sorted out it ends abruptly! I would have liked more details as to what happened in the end and how it all played out but we did get the answer to the most important question, was Sadie murdered or did she commit suicide? And why. All in all, it’s a good book worth reading if a mystery/thriller is your thing!
